Stephane Crayton
Modern Violin and Composition
Stephane is an academic and musician. He is an Affiliated Lecturer at the University of Cambridge, and Musician in Residence at Hughes Hall; he has taught at the Royal Academy of Music since 2018. Stephane's research focuses on broad issues of musical meaning; he is particularly interested in how listening attitudes have changed over time, and what that means for practice today. He has published on subjects ranging from twentieth-century poetic theory to seventeenth-century street cries, and is currently working on a monograph on the French Enlightenment composer, Jean-Philippe Rameau. His PhD (University of Cambridge, King's College) was Out of Order, an examination of the expressive operations of disorder. As a composer, Stephane has been performed and recorded by leading ensembles such as the CBSO. He performs regularly on baroque and modern violins, and in his spare time can be found in the dark room developing film.
